This quote is inaccurate and incomplete…as you have it stated, it means something VERY DIFFERENT than what Zappa actually said…here is the transcript form the 1987 interview from which this quote was cherry-picked…I think you will agree, as you have it, it means something completely different:
“Politics are the entertainment division of the corporate industrial/military complex…” ZAPPA PAUSED, SMOKED, CONTINUED: “Well, I think it behooves them [American citizens] to have political thoughts, but let me make a definition clarification here. I say politics is the entertainment branch of industry, and government is what we need. We have a diverse population in the United States, with all kinds of different needs that have to be taken care of. That is the righteous function of government. Politics is bullshit, basically.”
