The power of celebrity has never had a better example than Elvis to this day.
I have little doubt that as Elvis slid down into playing local state fairs, they figured this most manipulated figure was worth more “dead” than alive. Boy were they right. As usual, they made up a story that defies logic and made him look like a model of debauchery. I doubt he was, although his last TV special didn’t showed an out of shape, slurring singer (I still enjoy the show below though).
On a warm August afternoon in 1977, the world was stunned by the news coming from their radios and TVs.
In Memphis Wednesday, tens of thousands of fans traipsed past his Graceland grave.
But this year, it was going to cost them $28.75 for the privilege.
Longtime fan Fred Schwarz of Springfield, Ill., said he and his wife have been to several vigils over the years and have enjoyed them.
But not this year. He says fans should be insulted at the new charge.
