I see it like cycle helmet wearing, which has become the norm when there is no extra risk compared with the time before they started to be used by non-racing cyclists. [compulsory in Australia and perhaps other countries]
The propaganda is everywhere for masks – the “liberal” Guardian has been at the forefront of brainwashing the supposedly intelligensia.
    e.g. April 24

….unlike our European neighbours, the British public may end up being the “control group” for the face mask experiment the government has been demanding all along. But do we want to be?

i.e. yes, the Guardian wants everyone to wear masks like idiots.

More shit from the Guardian July 6 2020 – still repeating the mantra

There are things you can do, such as wearing a face mask, to protect yourself and slow the spread of the virus **. Chief among them are regularly washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, and catching coughs and sneezes in tissues.

** the non-existent summer virus which only seems to appear as “cases”.

Even here in Texas I went to Kroger for grocery shopping on Saturday and I was the only person in the store without a mask. It was very disheartening. I went early though so maybe the other non maskers went later in the day. I think Mrs. Fakeologist is about right in her estimate.
