Official summary
A bomb placed in a van parked outside the Sari Club in Kuta, Bali exploded, blowing out shop windows up to 500 yards away and a second bomb exploded in Paddy's Bar, opposite the Sari Club. The attack killed 202 people of more than 20 nationalities including 88 Australians, 38 Indonesians and 28 Britons. A further 209 people were injured. The explosion was blamed on the Jemaah Islamiyah, but al Qaida claimed credit for the attack.
In April 2003, Indonesian authorities charged Abu Bakar Bashir (also rendered "Ba'asyir"), the alleged spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, with treason. It was alleged that he tried to overthrow the government and establish an Islamic state.
