Aurora Borealis Effects

Is the Aurora Borealis visible from space? NASA seems to think so. I was always under the impression that it wasn’t a physical entity but more like a mirage in a desert or like a rainbow. Is it possible to see a rainbow in the vacuum of space? Is it not merely the byproduct of moisture in the air with the right amount of sunlight?

Halfway through this video the ISS picks up the ‘solar wind’ as it makes contact with the atmosphere:

This website basically says that the effect is caused by the sun farting its way over the earth and the gaseous green is the reaction to it.
