This episode of Myth Busters infuriated me when I originally saw it:

They want to prove that man went to the moon and to convince us that the sun can provide shadows that diverge from one another. In other words that they can spread apart in nature.
They wanted to recreate visual conditions as they supposedly happened on the moon back in 1969 so they built a scale model. They decided they needed to recreate the sunlight by using a spotlight? WHY? Why not just put the bloody model out under the actual sun?!! The spotlight at its close distance to the model provided the same diverging shadows as was evident in the old photographs.
This is actually ridiculous. In doing so they actually prove the pictures to be a fake as only a nearby light source could provide such deviating shadows.
This video demonstrates the point perfectly:

I agree….why not put the scale model outside in the sun? sadly their scale model looked better than the “supposed real thing” we are meant to believe…..Mythbusters BUSTED!
btw…the second link you posted only brought me to the main area of youtube, I couldn’t find any vid demonstrating the point in the link(at least for me)November 29, 2013 at 9:30 pm #5898Banazîr GalbasiMemberI fixed the link. I sent it from my tablet to a desktop computer. I guess the m vs. the www makes the difference.
Thanks Johnny!

Here is another example of black-and-white background: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0212/as17-140-21391.jpg
In this image the background has some colors in the background but it looks like a simple gradual color toning from tannish at the bottom to bluish higher up: http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/2333main_MM_Image_Feature_19_rs4.jpg
I think they took some outdoor photos and videos in ordinary sand landscapes on earth, and to make the sand look like moon dust, they used black and white for the background and color for the foreground details.
