during the last great war two men formed an alliance. one of these men was a paunchy s.o.b. who had just finished building the pentagon; the other was the creator of “big science” and the mystical machines behind it.
the two men would found a “secret city” in the foothills of the leconte massif in eastern tennessee. their collaboration was even prophesied by a mountain man named john hendrix, “the prophet of oak ridge”.
http://smithdray.tripod.com/or/johnhendrix.htm
general groves was the military man with a budget almost as fat as his belly and the atom smasher (not this atom smasher- http://www.comicvine.com/atom-smasher/4005-4921/) had the machines and the vision. in less than eighteen months the two men had constructed 9 buildings filled with 1100 calutrons. calutrons are basically cyclotrons (not this cyclotron- http://www.comicvine.com/cyclotron/4005-32284/) that were used to separate u235 from u238.
these clever fellows were lucky though. you see they had great people that worked for them. the atom smasher brought his crew of post docs from leconte hall and general groves had a team of hillbillies called the “calutron girls”.
i’d like you to meet gladys–
“Gladys Owens was one of “The Calutron Girls” from January 1945 to August 1945. She told her story recently to a group of interested historians in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She visited the actual site where she spent eight months of her life “watching meters and adjusting dials” without knowing what she was actually doing. She was one of a special group of young high school graduates hired and trained to do only what they were told to do without questioning and without discussion. She only knew she was doing something vital to her nation and was helping win the war.”

and here’s jane larson’s account of the grand social experiment that went down in oak ridge. jane’s husband, another berkeley hustler, and father both worked on the project. jane is a member of the cosmos club and the atom smasher was the best man at her wedding, heartwarming stuff.

here’s a wonderful propaganda video from the department of energy that should also warm your heart.

it seems that folks at oak ridge had no idea what the hell they were doing; but they were a contented lot, a nuclear family if you will. and that i think was the point of the y12 experiment. the fat general and the atom smasher and their minions tested the limits of human gullibility and were probably pleasantly surprised.
somehow these clowns convinced the “calutron girls” that they were better at operating the fraudulent machines that they knew nothing about than the atom smasher’s post docs who were probably in on the hustle. i’m sure the same technique worked for everybody else in the complex who, like gladys, knew they had no clue, but were certain they were doing something vital for the nation.
but gladys and co. weren’t in on the hustle; they just got played. no chance for a “big science” nobel for them.
http://science.energy.gov/about/honors-and-awards/doe-nobel-laureates/
p.s. groves also had a laurel and hardy type thing going on with oppenheimer. here’s paul tibbets take on the clowns.
“I think I went to Los Alamos [the Manhattan project HQ] three times, and each time I got to see Dr Oppenheimer working in his own environment. Later, thinking about it, here’s a young man, a brilliant person. And he’s a chain smoker and he drinks cocktails. And he hates fat men. And General Leslie Groves [the general in charge of the Manhattan project], he’s a fat man, and he hates people who smoke and drink. The two of them are the first, original odd couple.”

September 12, 2014 at 8:27 pm #28337smjParticipantthanks for the images tom; my posting skills are so crude i don’t know how to post images.
now that we have a real thread going (images and all); perhaps some general background info about atomic prescience is in order.
mandrake the magician gives dagwood a pretty comprehensive overview of the atomic hustle in this clever little comic book. it even has a prescient foreword by that paunchy general mentioned above. he talks to the children about truth and knowledge, light and darkness, and what not.
and here’s y12’s house historian, ray smith’s, history of the 9 building complex that housed 1100 calutrons.
enjoy.

For images, smj, you can copy the URL of the picture and then use the ”img” tab on the toolbar, just above, and drop it in.
You bring some fascinating stuff to the table, worthy of a few images, I reckon.
I love that old comic book, for a start.

The core group that would eventually lead to the Oak Ridge Boys was a country group called Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers**, formed in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were requested to perform to staff members and their families restricted during World War II at the nuclear research plant….

foot tapping while constructing the bomb.
September 16, 2014 at 8:52 am #31389Tom DalpraParticipantHOW TO PULL-OFF A BIG LIE
1) During a war, displace 3000 people.
2) Build 9 dirty great factories ( get it in concrete) and a City of 75,000.
3) Fill the factories with thousands of complicated looking machines.
4) Employ thousands of women from all over the US on good wages to work on these machines on a ‘secret’ project.
5) After a certain time say that you dropped an atomic bomb on Japan and that it ended the war.
6) Reveal to the thousands of women that they were making said bomb.
7) Celebrate.
Brilliant. You can’t go wrong.
Who is NOT going to believe it? And who’s gonna say it’s wrong?Getting the women involved ( in Britain women worked in the ammunition factories) was logical in practical terms, but also beneficial in terms of legitimising the concept of the bomb and cementing-in the lie.
When this apparently monstrous bomb was supposedly dropped and thousands of people were apparently liquidised, the Oak Ridge girls were called American heroines, without whom, this couldn’t have happened! Hurrah!
After the War, many of these young women then duly went back to towns and cities spread all over the US, brought up their children and continued their lives as living, walking proof of, and propaganda for, ‘the atomic bomb’.
They were part of it. They didn’t know what they were doing, but they were part of it.
We know that’s how a lot of things work.
