Queen of hoaxes from Liverpool

I thought I’d find a link to The Onion for this story, but I suppose The Guardian is almost the same.

Rock guitarist Brian May is named today as chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

The lead guitarist and songwriter for Queen, who recently completed his much-delayed PhD in astrophysics, succeeds Cherie Booth QC as ceremonial head of the institution.

Earlier this year, May was made an honorary fellow of the university for his contribution to the arts and encouraging the public understanding of science through his book Bang! the Complete History of the Universe, co-authored with Chris Lintott and Sir Patrick Moore.

Previous works included We Will Rock You, Fat Bottomed Girls, Tie Your Mother Down, I Want It All and Who Wants To Live Forever. But his website mixes and astrophysics; May’s blog today deals with the hyperbolic orbits of interstellar particles, for instance.

Just when you thought physics, science, and space couldn’t get any closer to science fiction.

All this from a great thread on the suspicious university in Liverpool, who seem to specialize in myth making.

Could be worse! At least Liverpool John Moores University got a flesh-and-blood stooge in Brian May.

Scotland’s University of Glasgow, by contrast, elected the mythical CIA whistle-blower Edward Snowdon as its Rector!

It’s quite unclear how Rev. E. Snowdrop will deliver his yearly sermon to freshers. Maybe via “satellite video-link” from his spiritual home in Langley, Virginia, to a giant screen on the University campus?!

The Moore family who founded LJMU – were bigwigs in gambling, mainly Football Pools. The Pools operators were put out of business by Camelot, operators of the National Lottery which today creates our fairytale lotto winners of £200 million upwards!

Can John Moore’s interest in myth-making be traced to its Pools days – manufacturing phony jackpot winners?
