I thought smart meters work by using the powerlines to send signals. This is like the household network/wifi extender thing that can be bought, that I know as tp link. So lots info can be sent on the wire. The issue isn’t how it can know what your meter’s reading is, that easy, simple info to send. It also aggregates all the info from any other smart devices that you may have, eg fridges, tvs, etc and sends that too.
