Some press reports of the Eddie Cochrane crash hoax:
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/4018547559

‘Two American recording stars, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, who headed the bill in a rock’n’roll show at Bristol Hippodrome last week, and were due to fly home to America, were involved in a crash yesterday. ‘Mr Cochran died, without regaining consciousness, at St Martin’s Hospital, Bath yesterday afternoon. Mr Vincent, with a fractured collarbone, is still detained there. ‘Within an hour of leaving Bristol for London after the last performance on Saturday, the hire car in which they were travelling collided with a lamp standard at Rowden Hill on the outskirts of Chippenham.

‘Mr Cochran’s body will eventually be taken back to America for burial. ‘There were two other passengers, Miss Sharon Sheeley (20), an American song- writer and Mr Patrick Tompkins (29), a theatrical agent of St James Road, Camberwell, London. ‘They too are detained at St Martin’s Hospital,in the city of Bath. Miss Sheeley with injuries to back and thigh, and Mr Tomkins with facial injuries and a suspected fracture of the base of the skull. ‘Neither Mr Vincent nor his two friends were said last night to be on the danger list.

‘The driver of the car, Mr George Martin of Bristol, was unhurt. ‘There were no other vehicles involved. Mr Tompkins said: ‘Just outside Chippenham the front tyre blew out and we skidded sideways into a lamp standard’. ‘He added that he had been planning to take a train back to London from Bristol but Mr Vincent suggested travelling by taxi.‘ The Everly brothers, Don and Phil, were in Bristol the next day and were deeply shocked by the news

Well, the accident damage doesn’t correspond with being wrapped round a lamp post, and a sideways skid seems rather unlikely.
There’s more nonsense in this “official story”

…a breakdown truck driver [no police at scene, clearly] allowed the following car to syphon gas from the Cochran wreck! I call garbage on that.

Regular road manager Hal Carter [d.2004] had been removed for the last Bristol dates and a substitute manager Patrick Thompkins[sic] was used

Larry Parnes took Carter off the tour on the last night because he needed him for a recording of the television programme Wham!

[Real name Harold Carter Burrows,b 1935, Liverpool]

And what of the elusive Mr Tompkins or Thompkins? No recorded birth.
    http://charliehall.proboards.com/thread/14746

Pat Thompkin’s own account of the journey indicates they were going the other way, which would be downhill. How could that be possible ?

This is Pat Thompkin’s account recalling the event sometime later.

*) “The driver decided on a short cut on the outskirts of Chippenham. We came out from under a viaduct and there was a bridge in front us. On your right is the A4, and on the left is the bridge and the A4 to London. Well, he saw a sign for the A4 and took that one. I told him he was going the wrong way. When he saw a milestone he realized he was going the wrong way and hit the brakes, which put the car into a spin. He lost control, and the Ford Consul sped backwards and slammed into the concrete lamp post”.
If they are still alive today, Pat Thompkins would be 82 and George Martin 80 years of age. Sharon Sheeley died On May 17th 2002, aged 62. She returned to the UK in 2000 for the festival in Chippenham to remember 40 years since his death, and the placement of the plaque on Rowden Hill.

If they are still alive today, Pat Thompkins would be 82 and George Martin 80 years of age.

[if those are their real names]

David Harman, a young police cadet at Chippenham Police station, was one of the first of the emergency services on the scene. (He would later become known as Dave Dee, of Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky, Mick & Tich fame).

Sharon Sheeley, who was in the car, speaks…[2001] Hal Carter speaks at 4:00 and from about 7:18; Johnny Gentle at 8.57 [he who allegedly syphoned fuel from the death crash wreck…]

Sharon: “I knew the minuted that car door shut something was going to happen The minute the door shut it was almost like a tomb closing on me. As we drove along I remember thinkng not ‘we could have an accident’ but I remember thinking ‘When are we going to have the accident'”

…..man in striped pullover, unnamed at 12:00

“It hit the post side on and it threw everthing and everybody out onto the grass It was just like a battlefield, you couldn’t say anything else

[mmm wonder how that petrol was syphoned of?]

    Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe…

The doors were wide open…sheets of music were blowing all over the place

“we saw bits of paper which we didn’t realise at the time was sheet music and this car on its side” – Johnny Gentle [pop singer, who would have been familiar with “sheet music”, perhaps?] followed by a faithful recounting of the syphon incident in the “battlefield”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Gentle
“Sharon suffered a broken back, neck and pelvis”
“A 10 per chance to live and yet I pulled through….I left my heart here [in the Bath hospital] ”

Nurse: “Three Steps to Heaven was on the ward radio” hmmmmm

    Crazy about James Dean.
Liked to die in a car accident.
I’d have to die in a Mini.

He said that in 1966. Which is an extraordinary thing to say.

    Crashed in 1977. FOX 66IL

    Truly extraordinary.

    Indeed, rgos.
He also seemed to be a very earlier user of the Heavy Metal Umlaut — or the Glam Rock Umlaut – see 9:00 and 9:26 – which is unremarked on elsewhere. Otherwise this has no relevance to the thread. He was a Metal Guru though, through and through.

What’s that about Gerri Knetemann, rgos? Did he not have a heart attack while out riding?
I guess he was the equivalent of a pop star in the Netherlands.

Cycling: also totally drug-ridden and media-driven. He “died” on the same day as that other talented faker, Theo van Gogh.

I really think they are sending ‘m off to the Radler Reservation in pairs.

    Marc Bolan and Maria Callas.

Give it a bit of Noah’s Ark touch…

Thanks rgos – alarm bells straight away:

was riding his mountain bike with three friends in Bergen when he stopped to fix his chain, which had fallen off. While he was fixing it, his heart stopped. The exact cause of his death is unknown.

Seems like a badly maintained bike being ridden by a novice…

And now it makes you wonder: where are these girls and guys going? Where is the Radler reservation? Where are the Islands?
Bolan was a tax-exile in Monte Carlo, so are places like these candidates?

    Monte Carlo
    Geneve
    Montreux
    Lichtenstein
    Andorra

Or simply hiding in plain sight, as Ab suggested?

I like Andorra for a little bit of peace and quiet:

    Ha, winki:

In various versions of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the rock star Hotblack Desiato is reported as “spending a year dead for tax reasons”. Also in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the character of Veet Voojagig “was finally sent into tax exile, which is the usual fate reserved for those who are determined to make a fool of themselves in public.”

[The extremely unfunny, imho] Douglas Adams
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1330138/Douglas-Adams.html

died suddenly in California aged 49

[only two years after moving there] from an unexpected heart attack….

Adams died of a heart attack on 11 May 2001, aged 49, after resting from his regular workout at a private gym in Montecito, California.

    I see…

The British-born Adams died Friday of an apparent heart attack in Santa Barbara, Calif., a family friend, Elizabeth Gibson, said Saturday. She said Adams collapsed while working out at a gym.
“He was not ill,” Gibson said. “This was completely unexpected.”

Ah, the “family friend” releasing information. Standard.

A rider who is doping is said to be loading the cannon, pissing violet or to be in possession of a magic suitcase.

    Different genre, same MO?

Sending ‘m off to the Reservation in pairs?

Not sure about the second, but the first has the whiff about him.

    65, that’s retirement age.
Had a rare spinal cord infarction two years ago causing partial paralysis.
He could still drive a car to Austria.
Then went out biking on his trike with his brother and got hit by another cyclist in a strange bike accident.
Fell from his bike and died in hospital.
    Death announced by manager/family friend.
