Pop concerts are fertile ground for hoaxes and staged events – think Altamont Raceway.
Or the “sudden death” of a close friend of David Cameron, the then UK Prime Minister, at the Glastonbury Festival in 2011

Denmark is low on the hoax radar, but supplied nine “deaths” at the 2000 Roskilde Festival. Suuuuuure it did. The good thing about staging a death in Denmark is that privacy laws prevent the “dead” being named. What’s not to like?

July 1 2000 Fatal Crush at Rock Festival
The festival, inspired by Woodstock, has run since 1971. And the “crush” produced a nice advert for Pearl Jam

Police said that the grounds were muddy after day-long rain, and the victims, who were pressed up against barriers in front of the stage, slipped and fell.
They were trampled to death as the crowds behind them surged forward.
“A group of some 15 spectators collapsed en masse in front of the rostrum, and people behind them began uncontrollably tumbling over them,” one eyewitness said.

The “grieving” prepared statement rushed out within an hour or two

The full text of Pearl Jam’s statement posted on the band’s website in response to Roskilde Festival tragedy:
“This is so painful… I think we are all waiting for someone to wake us and say it was just a horrible nightmare.

And there are absolutely no words to express our anguish in regard to the parents and loved ones of these precious lives that were lost.

We have not yet been told what actually occurred, but it seemed to be random and sickeningly quick… it doesn’t make sense.

When you agree to play at a festival of this size and reputation it is impossible to imagine such a heart-wrenching scenario.

Our lives will never be the same, but we know that is nothing compared to the grief of the families and friends of those involved.

It is so tragic… there are no words.

    Devastated,

    Pearl Jam
    suuuuure

    Grieving…

    Eight dead immediately, **
as reported in the NY times. Pearl Jam being a US band.
then…..one more “death” to prolong the story

    July 5 2000
The death toll from the Roskilde rock festival has risen to nine after a 24-year-old man died from his injuries on Wednesday.
The music fan from Melbourne, Australia had been in hospital after being caught up in the horrific crush at the Danish event.

A 26-year-old German police cadet from Hamburg, a 23-year-old Dutchman, three Swedes and three Danes were also killed in the crowd surge.
    A nice scattering of nationalities.

Danish authorities did not release the names of the dead. “It’s the law in Denmark,” Rungstroem says, “to protect the families.” But Rolling Stone has learned the identities of four of the victims. The Swedes were Carl-Johan Gustafsson, 20; Fredrik Turesson, 22; and Henrik Bondebjer, 22. The man who died on July 5th was identified by an Australian news agency as Anthony James Hurley, 24, of Melbourne.

It was one of Europe’s worst concert tragedies.
Last year, 52 people were killed and 150 injured at a concert at Minsk, Belarus, when a hailstorm hit and hundreds of fans rushed for a nearby subway station, turning into a deadly stampede.

    suuuuuuure they did.
