Human Anatomy: Male & Female Body Proportions

READ THIS FIRST

When looking into Elite Gender Inversion, is she or isn't she, it is useful to be aware of standard male and female body proportions and their differences. I have therefore created this thread to put anatomical references that might aid fakeologists better understand what to look for. Feel free to add any references that might be useful on this subject.

Male Vs Female Skull in 8 easy steps
Dan Crossland - https://dan-crossland.com

Whether it be drawing, or sculpting in clay or digital, knowing the key differences between the male and female skull are fundamental to creating a convincing realistic or stylised human head,

Here are 8 easy guidelines that I have learned through my anatomy projects, which I hope you find useful for your own work. I have separated the main differences between the male and female skull. However, that is not to say that features mentioned here are not found in their opposites, but as a general rule the following applies.

Lets take a look at the major differences between the male and female skull:

Masculine Skull
  • Projection of the brow ridge and nasal eminence beyond the root of the nose (ref–1)
  • Projection of the forehead at an inclined angle (ref–2)
Feminine Skull
  • Reduced weight and volume, thinner skulls walls, especially notable on the brow ridge and nasal eminence (ref–3)
  • Mandible is smaller with a more open angle (ref–4)
  • Bony processes and projections are smoother with less definition where the muscles insert, supra-mastoid crest, nuchal lines, zygomatic process, and supraorbital ridge etc (see blue markers)
  • Forehead more vertical continuing directly with the nasal bones (ref–5)
  • The parietal and frontal eminences are more developed, more room for brain cells :) that’s probably why females are so good at multi tasking (ref–6)
  • Flattened vertex (top of skull)(ref–7)

Male & Female Skulls

The human skull is an important part of the skeletal system, which basically provides sites for facial muscle attachments and forms a cranial cavity for the brain. The skull is made up of two parts that have different embryological differences; neurocranium, which is the protective vault surrounding the brain, and viscerocranium, which is composed of facial bones. There are 22 bones constitute to compose the human skull, and all these bones are joined together, except the mandible. Thus, the mandible is the only bone of the human skull which can be moved freely. The human skull contains several sinuses; air-filled cavities lined by respiratory epithelium. The exact function of these sinuses is still debatable. However, they may be important to reduce skull weight, provide voice resonance, and warm and moisture inspired air. Presence of sutures is a unique characteristic of skull. The sutures are a type of fibrous joint only occurs in the skull. There are 17 sutures on the human skull. Both male and female skulls are made up of 22 bones, but there are some distinguishable features between these two skulls.

The bones of male skull are much heavier than the female skull. The main characteristic features of the male skull include prominent superciliary arches, prominent glabella, eversion of angle of mandible, large mastoid process, and bones with better muscular markings. In addition, the eye orbits are somewhat square shaped in male skull.

Female Skull

Female skull is made up of much lighter bones than males, with smooth surfaces. The frontal and parietal eminences are larger than that of males. The orbits of female skull are rounded and larger. In addition, females show more rounder and more upright foreheads.

The differences between Male & Female Skull
  • Generally, male skull is more massive and heavier than female skull.
  • Male has a low and sloped frontal bone, whereas the female’s frontal lobe is higher and more rounded.
  • The eye orbits of males are somewhat square shaped, lower, relatively smaller with rounded superior margins while the female eye orbits are more circular, higher, larger with very sharp superior margins.
  • The lower jaw of male skull is square, with an angle of about 90°. In contrast, the lower jaw of female skull is sloped, an angle greater than 90°.
  • Male skull has squarer chin while female skull has V- shaped chin.
  • Usually males have thicker bones than females.
  • Facial bones of female skull are smoother than that of males.
  • Zygomatic bones of males are massive than that of females.
  • Suborbital margins are sharper in females, whereas they are more rounded in males.
  • The tympanic plate is larger and margins are rounded in males while that is smaller and the margins are less rounded in females.
  • Mastoid process is large in males, whereas it is small in females.
  • Generally, the width of male skull is greater in males, than that of female.
  • Palate of male is larger, broader, and tends to be U-shaped, whereas that of female tends to be a parabola.
  • Occipital condyles of males are larger than that of females.

Art Tips: Differences Between Male and Female Skull, Head, Face
Merrill Kazanjian

Lets look at the differences of the male and female skull first and then we will work our way up to the skin. Male and female children have similar skull shapes. But once children hit puberty, the differences start to appear. Testosterone provokes the growth of certain facial features in males, while female faces remain relatively childlike. The presence of higher levels of testosterone give men a thicker bone structure with more prominent bones. Male faces have a wider, more prominent jaw, chin and cheekbones (also known as the zygomatic arch). The physical size of the male skull is usually larger than the female skull. A very distinct characteristic of a male skull, is a protruding supraorbital ridge also known as a brow line.

Female faces are more rounded and tend to have a narrow jaw line. They have a softness that the male face lacks. It carries more fat than the male face, especially in the cheeks. Female faces tend to have thicker lips and a higher arch on the top lip. Female eyebrows generally sit a little higher than male eyebrows and they usually have a thinner and more arched shape, mainly due to plucking. The female nose tends to be smaller, shorter and have a narrower bridge and nostrils than the male one. Also, female noses often have a straighter or more concave profile. Men tend to have thicker and lower eyebrows than women. The male jaw line is wider than the female chin. It is also more muscular and square in shape. The lips are thicker and more full on a female. Also there is less of a distance between the arch of the top lip and the bottom of the nose.
