Re: Reality of German Arrogance and Hubris

In warfare, the psychology and resilience of the NARRATIVE is everything.
As soon you lose the initiative and can no longer credibly maintain your "war" story, you stand in danger of defeat.
Unless you can reverse the process, leadership and confidence erode catastrophically.

We are told that the "early winter" is what doomed the Third Reich's armies in the Soviet theater.
But their whole plan was a fantastic GAMBLE from the beginning.
Russia, as all previous invaders had sadly discovered, Bonaparte especially, is much too vast and spread out to conquer militarily.
What would the "surrender" of any government mean ?
Who would you negotiate with other than Russian generals and field marshals?
How would an occupying army consolidate control?
Almost impossible. And expensive beyond belief.
You could only plausibly rule through native PROXIES.
And the National Socialists either didn't succeed enough at turning defeated "enemies" or failed to do so entirely.
To rule Russia, you would need Russians. And the Germans never even got close to that.
For many reasons.

The Reich planned to transplant and exchange populations (lebensraum) on the most fertile lands of the newly conquered region; and enlist the subject population of Slavic peoples to slave labor.
You can read the plan in their own words.

Their state propaganda (media narrative) outpaced the reality, and ended up as a public relations disaster and general collapse of morale among troops and civilians.

The absolute giants of Dutch sketch comedy have tackled this very point poignantly on prime television, yeah already in the 90s!, the very best decade in the Lowlands (the nineties in my era definition ended for others on 11-9, for me 12-9-2001), with this comedy classic of a GEM, just watch them:

enjoy !

Conventional World War I narrative

Unread post by SaiGirl »

Conventional / mainstream narrative of World War I.
Based on Barbara Tuchman’s popular classics “The Guns of August” and “The Proud Tower”.

This is useful as a quick timeline for the basic landmark “events’ of the narrative.
