Semanticists speak on letters as symbols. E.g. out alphabet is an array of symbols, while some countries have 1000s of letters, this gives a different understanding of the world.

Not to speak on crosses, rainbows, cubes.

Skyscrapers are big cubes. I think this is not just for practical / esthetic reasons. It's symbolism.
