From 1933: One of the earliest "disaster" movies at the outset of "talkies".
First take note of the "globe" logo representing the Hollywood studio.
Note also, the special effects (tsunami, earthquakes, cities crumbling into the ocean).
Take note of the biplanes, airships and early-1930s "technology" shown.
Once the earth's destruction is past, the plot takes a strange twist; as pockets of survivors begin rebuilding.
The survivors' situation quickly deteriorates into gang warfare, rape and assorted brutality. A major issue is the "shortage" of available women, which leads to new "rules" in this chaotic post-apocalyptic new world.
As you watch this, bear in mind what was happening in the world outside the movie theater. We were stuck in the depths of a miserable economic collapse and depression. The idle unemployed and depressed masses would have flocked to the movie theaters to see this one. For it's time, it would have been considered spectacular.
And the Third Reich has just taken power in Germany.
