What is the myth about Mount Erebus?
Mt. Erebus – Antarctica - Atlas Obscura
It's a good name for the volcano. In Greek myth, Erebus was the son of the god Chaos, and his mother was Gaia or Earth. Erebus was made of darkness and shadow, and he filled the corners of the world with his darkness. Currently, the most active volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth,

A blog from someone allegedly at the South Pole station:
During 2022-2023, I deployed to Antarctica to work on IT projects. This was my first year on the ice.....
https://brr.fyi/about
.....
Is there Internet?
Yes, but it’s slow. Everything is over satellites, with limited bandwidth. I had web access, I could make outgoing phone calls, and of course there’s this silly blog.

Internet access at the South Pole is only available for part of the day, based on satellite visibility.

very interesting, napoleon. the majority of people at these antarctic stations are not scientists, when you step back and look crically, for all the alleged 'science' going on at the numerous, duplicated stations the costs surely don't stack up.
it's estimated that the annual cost of supporting one person at McMurdo Station can be in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
https://www.quora.com/How-much-money-is ... do-Station

obviously a lot more at the alleged interior stations - Scott [s.pole] vostok and concordia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concordia_Station
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vostok_Station

are they all doing the same 'science'? surely it's all the same stars and galaxies the see?

Most of the online videos show the cast of residents [thousands of $$$ per annum] having fun, working out, eating ir watching penguins.
these vids from the "south pole" are more interesting, discussing the alleged communication systems involving military satellites [hmmmm] and an
interview with the head of 'science' at Scott-Amundsen

how living at the south pole works [2021]

Meet Sasha, the Lead Scientist at the South Pole Station! [2022]

NASA, the ISS, space, antarctica, [admiral] birds of a feather,,,
of course you allegedly can't do anything else in antarctica apart from 'science' - there must be so many different experiments to perform by 'scientists' from so many different countries, I hope they're not duplicating anything at 'thousands of $$ per person per year,...

That xfiles is clueless I calculate in, but Ab you should be smarter.
This """article""" assumes many things, starting with the fact that there is even an Antarctica.

The scramble for Antarctica’s black gold: How Russian discovery of huge oil reserves in UK territory has made Falkland Islands the ‘world’s most valuable real estate’… with Putin and Xi eyeing treasure under frozen seas

of course Antarctica exists, you can visit it. And if you're brave you sail there yourself.

A former colleague of mine has done fieldwork on Antarctica. I shared the map he coproduced many times and I have personally seen the photos he took there.

and then taking this total nonsensical Daily Fail image:

Image

No, Russia did NOT "find oil", because in order to make such claim you have to drill wells and that is VERBOTEN in Antarctica. At maximum they could have shot seismic (which I believe is also illegal under the Antarctic Treaty) and then make interpretations and estimates and models, but that is NEVER the same as "finding oil" and not precise either.

the legend with this map speaks of "in billions of barrels" and then on top of that lists more billions.

It is impossible to estimate oil reserves based on no data, so this "500 billion barrels" is a figure just pulled out of Putin's pothole...

The absolute max that could have happened is that this "polar explorer ship" has observed oil slicks coming from the seabottom. But that
1) is only evidence of an active petroleum system, does not say anything about the size of the possible fields
2) can also be evidence of a failing, not sealing enough, petroleum system, as was the case in one of my study areas with lots of oil slicks

You make yourself look SO silly with this Hans Wormhole nonsense of suggesting that a place "does not exist" while you and me CAN EVEN VISIT it. And then pushing some Daily Fail total nonsense as indicative of anything....

If "Fakeology" has nosedived to these levels, I will not wear that moniker ever again.

I am here for serious and insightful research, not this nonsense...

Yes, that's your problem, you don't come with anything, it's just babbling about something that you cán actually check out.

But I understand that it's much easier shouting things than taking the time to come with points in favor of your stance.

Realology, you get JLB points for that, enjoy them, you have an ally!

From how far can you see Mount Everest?
You can see Mount Everest (theoretically) from a distance of 340 km.
Assuming you are at sea level, with your eyes at 1.6 m above the ground, your horizon (at a distance of about 4.5 km) would cover the entirety of the tallest mountain on Earth only if you are at more than 340 km away from it. Theoretically, you can see the summit of Everest from Bangladesh; however, other peaks cover it!

Let's go on a tour of Antarctica. No, not the coastal stations.

Concordia Station, a joint French-Italian venture. aka Dome C. opened 2005
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concordia_Station
It is located 1,100 km (680 mi) inland from the French research station at Dumont D'Urville, 1,100 km (680 mi) inland from Australia's Casey Station and 1,200 km (750 mi) inland from the Italian Zucchelli Station at Terra Nova Bay. Russia's Vostok Station is 560 km (350 mi) away. The Geographic South Pole is 1,670 km (1,040 mi) away. The facility is also located within Australia's claim on Antarctica, the Australian Antarctic Territory.
How did they decide to site the station where it is. "ok mes amis, I think we've come 1100km so far, I think we'll build it here. No problem with Russian neighbours or wildlife. Seems perfect.
Transport to the base is either by a four hour flight from one of the coastal stations or by overland crossing from Dumont d’Urville, which takes about 12 days.
https://www.bmj.com/content/338/bmj.b2453
Concordia station has been proposed as one of the real-life Earth-based analogues for long-duration deep-space missions
suuuure.
Concordia Station has been identified as a suitable location for extremely accurate astronomical observations.
out of all the other 14 million square kilometers of Antarctica. Suuuure. Better than the Russians'?

But "on this spot" some time earlier...[again chosen very carefully no doubt]
In the 1970s, Dome C was the site of ice core drilling by field teams of several nations. In the 1990s, Dome C was chosen for deep ice core drilling by the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). Drilling at Dome C began in 1996 and was completed on December 21, 2004, reaching a drilling depth of 3270.2 m, 5 m above bedrock

We feel that the clue to the change in glacial frequency lies in the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, so a team of European scientists intend to drill another ice core that we hope will reach back 1.5 million years.

Candidate sites for the ‘Oldest Ice’ drilling project have been chosen using ice sheet modelling, but need field observations to confirm and select the best site. We will deploy our Rapid Access Isotope Drill (RAID) at candidate sites near to Dome C to recover ice back to the last glacial period to confirm age-depth models...
Researchers from BAS are surveying a site – Little Dome C – which is 50 kms away from the French-Italian Concordia Station at Dome C
BAS Ice coring scientist Dr Robert Mulvaney will undertake the site survey at Little Dome C
I can't find any published work from Little Dome C
18 Dec 2017
https://www.bas.ac.uk/blogpost/science- ... le-dome-c/
More recently 2016-2019, a new Dome C 50km [why so?] away from Dome C was constructed for further ice core drilling
https://www.bas.ac.uk/project/beyond-epica/

Just so you know where we are, they've kindly made a sign for the postal delivery at Little Dome C, 50km distant from the Mother Dome C
Image
We have three vehicles to pull all our science equipment and living spaces 50 km across the ice to Little Dome C – two Pisten Bullys (snow groomers in the Alps) and a Caterpillar tractor. We carry 10,000 litres of fuel for the vehicles, and for the main generator in the caboose, in a large steel tank.
sounds very dangerous, but NDNGH in the process.

Japanese Dome F for Fuji station

Unread post by xileffilex »

Not to be outdone, the Japanese established Dome F about 1000km inland from their coastal Syowa station
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_F
it was decided upon, being an "exceptional" site for astronomy, one of the coldest places on earth.
F, also known as Dome Fuji, is the second-highest summit of the Antarctic plateau, at an altitude of 3,810m.

[PLATO-F was taken to the Japanese inland station at Dome F by the 52nd JARE expedition in late 2010, by a 1000km traverse over a period of two weeks.PLATO-F is an evolution of the original PLATO experiment that began operation at the Chinese Kunlun station at Dome A in January 2008.
This is a robotic station.

Norway has the claim to this sector of Antarctica. Wikipedia says that the base closed in 2019 without reference

In January 2019 we read
At present, to open Dome Fuji Base, each southern summer season, it is necessary to take around 1100 tons of cargo and fuel, including the support supplies for the Antarctic operations, which begin from the vicinity of the Syowa base. It is a journey that takes place with motorized snow vehicles and that, due to the sastrugi, takes about three weeks of travel.
sounds very expensive for a few ice cores, and very dangerous.
