Anything to stir the pot.
Andrea Dykes, aged 27, from Colchester, Essex, was four months pregnant. John Light, aged 32, also from Colchester, had been her husband's best man at their wedding, and Nicholas Moore, aged 31, who lived in London, had been friendly with the Dykes for several years.

Mrs Dykes's husband, Julian, aged 25, was fighting for his life in hospital unaware of her death. The fifth person in the group, Gary Partridge, was in a critical condition.

Nineteen people remained in hospital with burns and limb injuries. Four men were critically injured, three of whom had had legs amputated.

Three people remain in hospital after the Brixton blast on April 17, which injured 39 people. A week later another nail bomb in Brick Lane, east London, injured seven.

On 30 June 2000, Copeland was convicted of three counts of murder and planting bombs and given six life sentences.[1] The trial judge doubted that it would ever be safe to release Copeland.[26]

On 2 March 2007, the High Court decided that Copeland should remain in prison for at least fifty years, ruling out his release until 2049 at the earliest, when he would be 73

BBC revisted the event 20 in 2019, with personal stories, Boston-style

Prof Gus McGrouther, the on-duty consultant who treated the Soho survivors at University College Hospital, described some of the injuries as worse than those seen in IRA attacks.

He told BBC Newsnight there was a tremendous desire on the part of hospital staff to reverse the evil of Copeland's act. **

"As the bomb was placed on the floor, there were a lot of bad leg injuries. There were people coming in with their legs partially amputated," Prof McGrouther said.
"Gus" was also the go-to man in 2009 for the 10th anniversary

"The patients all had severe blast injuries. Most of them were bleeding and many had limbs hanging off them – legs mostly. There were a lot of burns as well and several were unconscious. They were all cleaned up and taken to theatre within two hours of arriving. We had to amputate quite a number of limbs.

"It was after the operations that the trouble really started. Blast damage from nail bombs creates countless injuries. One or two of the patients probably had more than 1,000 wounds; you just couldn't count them. In the days after they all started to bleed because they had what's called a coagulopathy, which means their blood isn't able to clot any more. One patient unfortunately bled to death because he had multiple injuries to his head and both legs. He was unconscious. Another patient had to be given 200 pints of blood in a week. You only have eight to start with, so that gives you an idea of how much he was losing. He had 35 operations and was in hospital for 15 months but ultimately survived.

"I was in the hospital for 72 hours from the day the bomb went off and was there every night until 11 o'clock for the next month. I got to know all of the patients intimately. There was one who recovered some days later and we had to tell him that his wife and unborn child had been killed in the blast. That was horrific. The measure of devastation to these people's lives from one insane individual was just enormous.

Jonathan Cash, then 30, was at the Admiral Duncan waiting to meet friends.

"My foot touched a large sports bag which was on the floor," he said. "I ordered a drink and, thinking about the bag, assumed it belonged to someone. I can remember weighing up the possibility that it might be a bomb thinking, 'but these things only ever happen to other people'."

The bomb exploded at 18:37.

"The table I put my drink on, fixed to the floor, had gone," he said. "I couldn't see more than a few inches in front of my face because of the thick, acrid smoke." ***
"The next thing I knew, I was on my hands and knees in front of a shop window. I stared at my reflection, unable to to recognise myself. My hair was thick with yellow dirt. I noticed I had left a trail of blood behind me, but I wasn't aware of any injuries.
Those who allegedly died were all friends what's the odds? Mr Light, their best man, was gay and was going to be the godfather.

** what on earth does that mean?
*** no mention of the 1500 nails which had exploded in front of him.
Copeland bought £1,500 of fireworks from two stores in Farnborough, Hants, and ignition devices from a firm in Dorset. He used old-fashioned alarm clocks as his timers. He packed up to 1,500 nails in each completed device, which he taped into sports holdalls.

Before heading to Brixton for the first attack, he experimented with different mixtures of "flash powder" to get the biggest explosion, blowing up small lengths of pipe at a common near the bedsit he rented from a local vicar.
suuuure he did.

"Survivor" Julian Dykes had married Andrea Maddock in 1997. Julian married again in 2004 and had a son the next year.

THE man who lost his wife, unborn son and best friend in the Soho nail bomb attack has found new love.

Julian Dykes's life was shattered when his wife Andrea, who was three months pregnant, and pal John Light were killed by the blast at the Admiral Duncan pub.
Five years later the 31-year-old computer expert is looking to the
future with Wendy Riches, who has moved into his house in Brightlingsea, near Colchester, Essex.
Andrea's mum Frances Hogg said she was pleased Julian has found happiness again.

Julian has never spoken about the bomb attack on April 30, 1999.
