Company Profiles in the Towers

Unread post by rachel »

In the Corona Connections thread, I'm interested in the links to China, and more specifically, Wuhan. I started looking at the companies listed as having offices on floor 45; I noticed most of them seemed to be Chinese import/export. I guess this in itself isn't rocket science since this was a Port Authority building. But I find it interesting that the Port Authority had their offices on floor 43 and most of the businesses listed on floor 45 were to do with Chinese imports/exports, and for these floors there where escalators connecting 43, 44, 45, meaning it was relatively easier to travel between these floors than others in 1 WTC.

This might also be a totally academic connection, because while after my elevator discovery it seems clear these buildings were built with the very real intentions of providing work space for "50,000 people"; I suspect even before they were finished, the practicalities meant they were white elephants, and the floors that were actually finished and used where the ones situated around the skylobbies, further connected with escalators and local stairs.

So the point of this thread is for historic articles relating to businesses in the towers, really to see if there are any clues. I'll start with a Wall Street Journal article, well the part it lets me preview, it's for solicitors, Harris Beach & Wilcox, LLP. And this claims to be an image of just outside their office on floor 85 of 2 WTC.

Harris Beach & Wilcox LLP, a law firm based in Rochester, N.Y., had 113 employees on the 85th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center. Dozens were in the tower when the first plane hit. So far, 108 members of the New York office have reported they are safe, with no serious injuries.

The firm has started to use space at 1 Penn Plaza, the site of another company that recently merged with Harris Beach.

Through a large client, the firm has also found fully furnished space at 500 Fifth Ave. in Manhattan. It is to be occupied Saturday and the firm plans to be fully operational at that location by Monday. A mailing has been sent to all clients, and most received telephone calls advising them of the new address and telephone number.

Managing partner Gunther Buerman described a harrowing week for the firm that was to have been punctuated Friday by a "group hug meeting" of the entire firm at the new Fifth Avenue location. Plans for the reunion were on hold Thursday afternoon, however, because both New York buildings had been evacuated due to bomb threats. In addition, firm members were uncertain whether they would be able to get flights to New York from locations in upstate New York and Canada.

The ordeal for Mr. Buerman began Tuesday as it did for many Americans. He was hoping to catch the financial headlines on television at his home outside Rochester before leaving for work...

Is it realistic they would be able to sort their shit so fast? Everything, all their records, case files, etc, get destroyed on Tuesday, and they are back up and running the following Monday. I'm guessing they were already in their new offices, and they were just using 2 WTC as a postal address.

My thoughts entirely, a mail box.
Here's the 2020 complement of attorneys on the 85th... allegedly 40 in number [Aug 2000] and unchanged in April 2001 if you can believe that.

Two of the "deceased" partners don't show up on the website at any location, neither do the two associates.
The only "victim" among the 5 "lost" employees Mark Brisman can be observed in action in the courts in 1996:

and again in 1998

Plenty of pics here

Someone please tell me he didn't exist. Probably in Israel, my best guess.

Harris Beach Wilcox only acquired a NYC address at the start of 1996

Harris, Beach & Wilcox LLP picked up a Park Avenue law firm last week in its drive to run a legal-services thruway across New York.
Merging with the 12-attorney O’Connor, Reddy & Seeler P.C. puts a New York City stop on Harris, Beach’s state sweep, which includes offices in Buffalo, Ithaca, Syracuse and Albany, as well as its Rochester headquarters and a Washington, D.C., branch. With more than 105 attorneys here, it ranked second on the Rochester Business Journal’s 1995 list of top area law firms.
By 1998 the address of HBW was the 19th floor of 250 Park Avenue

11 attorneys including C.Alan Reddy and Evelyn H Seeler
https://web.archive.org/web/19980201204 ... .com/tour/

By Feb 1999 there were only 15 attorneys in NYC, including Mr O'Connor
In July [2000], Harris Beach moved its New York City into the entire 85th floor of Two World Trade Center to accommodate growth from a merger with a 28-attorney practice group from Lester Schwab Katz & Dwyer, LLP. **

This accounts for the 40 attorneys allegedly operating out of the 85th floor on April 28 2001

** which still operates as such, with no mention of Beach Wilcox on its site.
For the record, here are LSK&D's attorneys in June 2001, none of whom appear on the expanded HB list.

When I was looking up one of the Chinese companies, I came across a result for a 'World Trade Center Business Recovery Grant', from it I found a database of around 7600 hits relating to New York 2002, but I now realise there are probably a fair few more, because it abruptly stopped on page 10, the search can only capture up to 10,000 results it would appear. Anyway, actually putting in 'Harris Beach LLP', there are four results for grants. Three in 2002 and another in 2004, two directly related to the towers. From the Corona Connections thread:
rachel wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2024 3:50 pm It starts on page 24 - https://subsidytracker.goodjobsfirst.or ... sc&page=24
And seems to stop at page 100 - https://subsidytracker.goodjobsfirst.or ... c&page=100

There are 100 companies listed on each page, grants run from $1,000+ up to $300,000. That would make free money for around 7,600 companies. No wonder everyone played along and had nothing to say. I suppose the question is, were they all real companies, or a series of shell companies.

Below are the results for Harris Beach LLP, the two 'NYC: World Trade Center Business Recovery Grants' are for $18,608 and $281,392 magically adding up to that apparent ceiling amount of $300,000. You'd expect no less from a law firm. The other two grants seem to be from the same pot of money; unknown if it's a continuation of the Recovery Grants, but likely as it starts in 2002. That's $161,000 in 2002 and $143,500 in 2004, totalling $304,500 from the 'NYC: Small Firm Attraction and Retention Grant'. A grand total of $604,500 free money. Though I'm sure it wasn't actually free...someone paid.

Anyway, here's a copy of the listings:
