Since the “New York Times” explanation isn’t smothered in “spiritual” or “NPC download” language, but located securely in the world of profit, bribery and extortion (racketeering), I don’t expect people to find it very entertaining or satisfying.
In fact, the “spiritual” bias leads one to "miss" or ignore the simplest material motives for the decline and fall of a culture and civilization.
In reality, it's a very banal, mundane and easy to explain process of corruption and GREED.
