7 229 hijacking by Algerian terrorists in Algiers, Algeria. Landed at Marseille, France. At one point, the hijackers dropped the demand for the release of the party leaders.
Two hours after the hijacking began, the hijackers asked the captain to depart for Paris so the hijackers could hold a press conference there.
The captain could not take off as the aircraft boarding stairs were still attached to the A300 and the Algerian authorities blocked the runway with parked vehicles.
When the captain, forced by the hijackers, asked for the removal of the boarding stairs, the Algerian authorities, determined not to give in to any of the hijacker demands, refused.
The hijackers announced that they would detonate the aircraft unless the Algerian authorities gave in to the demands.

British Airways Flight 9 1982 06/24 0 263 The aircraft flew into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung (approximately 110 miles (180 km) south-east of Jakarta, Indonesia), resulting in the failure of all four engines. The reason for the failure was not immediately apparent to the crew or air traffic control. The aircraft was diverted to Jakarta in the hope that enough engines could be restarted to allow it to land there. The aircraft glided out of the ash cloud, and all engines were restarted (although one failed again soon after), allowing the aircraft to land safely at Jakarta, Indonesia. [ACI 63] [WP 78]
Air Canada Flight 797 1983 06/02 23 23 In-flight fire behind the lavatory that spread, filling the plane with toxic smoke. The spreading fire also burned through crucial electrical cables that knocked out most of the instrumentation in the cockpit, forcing the plane to divert to Cincinnati Airport. 90 seconds after the plane landed and the doors were opened, the heat of the fire and fresh oxygen from the open exit doors created flashover conditions, and the plane's interior immediately became engulfed in flames, killing 23 passengers who had yet to evacuate the aircraft, another 23 -55- escaped. [ACI 64] [WP 79]
Korean Air Flight 801 1997 08/06 228 26 Flight 801 from Seoul to Guam, Pacific. There was heavy rain at Guam so visibility was significantly reduced and the crew attempted an instrument landing. The glideslope ILS in runway 6L was out of service; the captain believed it was in service. Despite protests from the flight engineer that the detected signal was not the glide-slope indicator, the captain pressed on 12 seconds before impact, the Ground Proximity Warning system activated and warned the crew about their actual altitude. The first officer declared a missed approach, and the captain declared a go-around, but it was too late. At 1:42 am, the aircraft's main gear struck a pipeline, and crashed into Nimitz Hill, breaking apart the fuselage, and causing the now-exposed jet fuel to ignite. The crash site was about 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) -33- short of the runway, at an altitude of 660 feet (200 m).

Helios Airways Flight 522 2005 08/14 121 0 Flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Athens, Greece, crashed, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board. A loss of cabin pressurization had incapacitated the crew, leaving the aircraft flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel and descended into the ground near Grammatiko, Greece. It is the deadliest aviation accident in Greek history. 2 F-16 fighter aircraft from the Hellenic Air Force 111th Combat Wing were scrambled from Nea Anchialos Air Base to establish visual contact. They intercepted the passenger jet at 11:24 and observed that the first officer was slumped motionless at the controls and the captain's seat was empty. They also reported that oxygen masks were dangling in the passenger cabin. At 11:49, flight attendant Andreas Prodromou entered the cockpit and sat down in the captain's seat, having remained conscious by using a portable oxygen supply. Prodromou held a UK Commercial Pilot License, but was not qualified to fly the Boeing 737. Crash investigators concluded that Prodromou's experience was insufficient for him to gain control of the aircraft under the circumstances. Prodromou waved at the F16s very briefly, but almost as soon as he entered the cockpit, the left engine flamed out due to fuel exhaustion and the plane left the holding pattern and started to descend. Delta Air Lines Flight 191 1985 08/02 137 27 Flight 191, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar from Fort Lauderdale to LAX, with stopover in Dallas, Texas encountered a microburst while on approach to land at DFW. The aircraft struck the ground over a mile short of the runway, struck a car near the airport, and then collided with two water tanks and disintegrated. The crash killed 137 people, 27 survived (911) and injured 28 others. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the crash resulted from the flight crew's decision to fly through a thunderstorm, the lack of procedures or training to avoid or escape microbursts, and the lack of hazard information on wind shear.

Gimli Glider 1983 07/23 0 all (69) Flight from Montreal to Edmonton, Canada, that ran out of fuel at an altitude of 12,500 metres (41,000 ft), midway through the flight. The crew was able to glide the Boeing 767 aircraft safely to an emergency landing at a former Royal Canadian Air Force base in Gimli, Manitoba, that had been turned into a motor racing track. This unusual aviation incident earned the aircraft the nickname "Gimli Glider." The subsequent investigation revealed that a combination of company failures, human errors and confusion over unit measures had led to the aircraft being refuelled with insufficient fuel for the planned flight. All passengers and crew survived in this miracle. On the 25th anniversary of the incident in 2008, pilots Pearson and Quintal were celebrated in a parade in Gimli, and a mural was dedicated to commemorate the landing. It was dismantled in early 2014, but not scrapped. Parts of the metal were made into metal luggage tags and are offered for sale by a California company, Moto Art. A permanent museum exhibit of the event opened in Gimli June 2017 and includes a cockpit mock-up flight simulator and memorabilia. Zal rule: Falling from the Sky: Flight 174 (1995), loosely based on this event. [ACI 73] [WP 87]
American Airlines Flight 96 1972 06/12 0 all (67) Flight with 11 crew and 56 passengers (??) from LAX to New York City, above Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the left rear cargo door of the DC-10-10 operating the flight blew open, sometimes referred to as the Windsor incident. In spite of the recommendations, on March 3, 1974, less than two years after the near-loss of Flight 96, Turkish Airlines Flight 981 crashed outside Paris, killing all 346 passengers and crew on board for an identical rear cargo door failure. Unlike Flight 96, where the crew still managed to keep enough flight controls to safely return to Detroit, the pilots of Flight 981 lost complete control of the tail surfaces and all hydraulics. [ACI 5] [WP 88]
South African Airways Flight 295 1987 11/28 159 0 Flight from Taiwan to South Africa, experienced a catastrophic in-flight fire in the cargo area, broke-up in mid-air, and crashed into the Indian Ocean east of Mauritius, killing all 159 people on board. An extensive salvage operation was mounted to try to recover the flight data recorders, one of which was recovered from a depth of 4,900 metres (16,100 ft). The official inquiry, headed by Judge Cecil Margo, was unable to determine the cause of the fire. This lack of a conclusion led to conspiracy theories being advanced in the following years. Japanese professional wrestler Kazuharu Sonoda and his bride, Mayumi Sonoda were on board. [ACI 74] [WP 89]
Air Midwest Flight 5481 2003 01/08 21 0 Flight 5481 (99), registration number N233YV, from North to South Carolina stalled while departing the airport and crashed into an aircraft hangar. All 21 people on board were killed, and one person on the ground was also injured.

Southern Airways Flight 242 1977 04/04 72 22 Flight 242 (44) crashed on 04/04 after a forced landing on Highway 92 Spur in New Hope, Georgia, United States after suffering hail damage and losing thrust on both engines in a severe thunderstorm. 81 passengers and 4 crew members were on board, of which 72 died (63 from the plane, 9 on the ground). 22 survived.

Air India Flight 182 1985 06/22 329 0 Flight 182 (11) with 329 (3x11=33) people on board from Toronto to Bombay explodes in the air and crashes into the Atlantic Ocean, off Ireland. Sikh extremists are blamed for the bombing. The suspects in the bombing used pay phones and talked in code. Translators' notes of wiretapped conversations include the following exchange between Talwinder Parmar and a follower named Hardial Singh Johal on 20 June 1985, the day the tickets were purchased:
Parmar: Did you write the story?
Johal: No, I didn't.
Parmar: Do that work first.
This conversation appears to be an order from Parmar to "book the airline tickets". It is believed that "writing the story" referred to purchasing the tickets; afterward, Johal phoned Parmar back and asked if he could "come over and read the story he asked for", to which Parmar agreed. By 09:13 UTC, the cargo ship Laurentian Forest discovered wreckage of the aircraft and many bodies floating in the water. India's civil aviation minister announced the possibility that the plane had been destroyed by a bomb, and the cause was probably some sort of explosion. Previous 747s had been damaged or destroyed on the ground, but this was the first jumbo jet downed by sabotage.

Birgenair Flight 301 1996 02/06 189 0 Flight from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic to Frankfurt, Germany, via Gander, Canada, and Berlin crashed shortly after take-off in the Dominican Republic. The cause was a pitot tube that investigators believe was blocked by a wasp nest that was built inside it. The aircraft had sat unused for two days without the pitot tube covers in place. Crash happened 38 (11) years after the Manchester United Munich plane crash.

Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 1972 12/29 101 75 Flight from JFK to Miami, crashed into the Florida Everglades at 11:42 pm, causing 101 fatalities. The pilots and the flight engineer, two of 10 flight attendants, and 96 of 163 passengers died, while 75 passengers and crew survived. The crash occurred while the entire flight crew was preoccupied with a burnt-out landing gear indicator light. They failed to notice that the autopilot had inadvertently been disconnected and, as a result, the aircraft gradually lost altitude and crashed. [ACI 83] [WP 94]
Gol Transportes Aéreos Flight 1907 2006 09/29 154 (plane 1) 7 (plane 2) Mid-air collision between a Boeing 737 and a small plane, collided almost head-on at 37,000 feet (11,000 m), approximately midway between Brasília and Manaus, near the town of Matupá in Brazil. All people on board the Boeing died and all on the small plane survived. The accident, which triggered a crisis in Brazilian civil aviation, was the deadliest in that country's aviation history at the time. Wallace rule: A Tragédia do Vôo 1907 (2007).
