One for some imagery to be invoked. The radio broadcasts at the time screamed out “acted event”; it didn’t even need the Al-Qaeda [where did they go to?] logo on the tin to flag up “suspicious as reported”.

Sept 1 (Reuters) – A major gas plant in Algeria where 40 employees were killed by Islamist militants last year is returning to normal operations following a big step up in security, one of the plant’s operators said on Monday.

nicely timed to coincide with the opening of the inquests into 7 workers:

Carson Bilsland and Kenneth Whiteside, both from Scotland; Sebastian John, from the East Midlands; Stephen Green, from Hampshire; Paul Morgan and Garry Barlow, both from Liverpool, and Carlos Estrada, originally from Colombia but who lived in London, were killed during the attack.

Thirty-nine hostages died during the four-day siege led by militants linked to al-Qaeda.

The inquests into the British deaths were due to begin at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, 20 months after being opened and adjourned.

However, it today emerged that some of the victims’ families had concerns that the truth about their deaths may never be revealed because Algerian authorities were withholding vital documents.

Photographs and interviews handed to the coroner will not be disclosed to the families during the hearing because the criminal trial of the surviving attackers is yet to take place in Algeria.

A national newspaper today reported the Algerian judge had invited the families to attend the trial in Algeria and promised they would eventually be shown the withheld photographs and interviews.

The senior coroner for West Sussex, Penelope Schofield, had overseen the inquests until this month before being replaced by Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC, who has security clearance to read sensitive material.

She said: “The information has been provided to me by the Algerian authorities on the basis that it should not be further disseminated or made public because it relates to the criminal cases being prepared in Algeria.

“I have not obtained the consent of the Algerians to share that material. The [Algerian] judge has disclosed it to me on the basis of judge to judge. The judge has offered all the families access to this material at the criminal trial so it’s not the case that they will never see it.”

A mystery wrapped up conveniently in an enigma.

convoy targated by Algerian gunships, allegedly

    “damaged Islamist militants’ vehicles.

    That’s about it.

originally from Liverpool but living in Spair, Paul Thomas Morgan was the first to be killed….

Speaking on Sunday, Alan Wright, who survived the attack, described how he hid in an office after the jihadists stormed the compound last Wednesday.

Wright, 37, a BP employee, said he eventually joined Algerian colleagues who fled by cutting their way out through a fence.

Post-mortem examinations carried out in the UK found that Mr Barlow, Mr Whiteside and Mr Bilsland had all died from injuries caused by an explosion.

Mr John died from a blunt injury to the head, Mr Morgan was killed by a gunshot wound to the head and Mr Green died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Mr Estrada, who was snatched by the terrorists from the plant’s VIP block, died from injuries caused by an explosion and multiple gun shot wounds, the court heard.

    What about this lucky Filipino…

A Filipino survivor, Joseph Balmaceda, who gave a press conference after his escape, said gunmen used him for cover: “Whenever government troops tried to use a helicopter to shoot at the enemy, we were used as human shields.”
Balmaceda, nursing abrasions to his face and a loss of hearing, said he was the only survivor out of nine hostages who were aboard a van that exploded, apparently from a C-4 charge rigged to the vehicle by militants. “I was sandwiched between two spare tyres … I crawled about 300 metres to where the government forces were. When I reached them I fainted. I woke up in hospital.”

    looks in good shape
